The Book of Psalms is a book that challenges and encourages us in our faith and worship to the Lord. In Psalms 121–150 in particular, we are challenged and encouraged to trust the Lord in all of our circumstances. In studying these psalms, we are reminded of God’s goodness and grace that moves us to place our trust in Him.

For generations, the car playlist has been an essential component of any road trip, setting the mood. The Psalms of Ascent were the Israelites’ playlist – songs that were sung by the Israelites every year on their way to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. In this plan, we start unpacking these psalms and reflect on the way these songs that were sung centuries ago still apply to us on our Christian journey.

The 15 Psalms of Ascent were traditionally sung by pilgrims as they made a mountainous journey to Jerusalem for the annual feast, and are now songs for us to sing in our journey toward our true home in heaven. During this 15-day reading plan we will dive into these pilgrim songs focusing on one Psalm per day.

The Ascent… is an invitation to climb. It’s an invitation to proximity. It’s an invitation to intimacy. In the Old Testament there are 15 psalms of ascent. They are songs that Israel sang on their way to celebrate God at festivals. They express amazing grace and they quiet anxious fears. They are songs that provide courage and support as we travel the road of faith and discover who we are and what God’s called us to. It has been said that the Psalms of Ascent are like placing your feet in the footprints of others and reminding ourselves to be moved again; to keep walking forward in the direction of God. This devotional is an invitation to lift our eyes and to ascend the heights; to becoming Jesus’ climbing companions.

Students join us for a study through the Psalms of Ascent as we climb the mountain toward Winter Weekend. Our goal is for hearts to be softened and ready for God to speak powerfully when we gather together.
