Cuando finalmente encontraron agua, esta era tan amarga que no la pudieron beber. Por eso los israelitas llamaron a ese lugar Mará, que quiere decir «amarga»; pero también le reclamaron a Moisés: «¿Y ahora qué vamos a beber?»
Moisés le pidió ayuda a Dios. Entonces Dios le mostró un arbusto y le ordenó que lo arrojara al agua amarga. Moisés así lo hizo, y al instante el agua se puso dulce.
En ese mismo lugar Dios puso a prueba a los israelitas y además les dio reglas de conducta.
