1
1The words of Amos, who was among the #2 Kin. 3:4; Amos 7:14sheepbreeders of #2 Sam. 14:2; Jer. 6:1Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of #2 Kin. 15:1–7; 2 Chr. 26:1–23; Is. 1:1; Hos. 1:1Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of #2 Kin. 14:23–29; Amos 7:10Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the #Zech. 14:5earthquake.
2And he said:
“The Lord #Is. 42:13; Jer. 25:30; Joel 3:16roars from Zion,
And utters His voice from Jerusalem;
The pastures of the shepherds mourn,
And the top of #1 Sam. 25:2; Is. 33:9Carmel withers.”
Judgment on the Nations
3Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of #Is. 8:4; 17:1–3; Jer. 49:23–27; Zech. 9:1Damascus, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they have #2 Kin. 10:32, 33threshed Gilead with implements of iron.
4#Jer. 49:27; 51:30But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael,
Which shall devour the palaces of #1 Kin. 20:1; 2 Kin. 6:24Ben-Hadad.
5I will also break the gate #2 Kin. 14:28; Is. 8:4; Jer. 51:30; Lam. 2:9bar of Damascus,
And cut off the inhabitant from the Valley of Aven,
And the one who holds the scepter from Beth Eden.
The people of Syria shall go captive to Kir,”
Says the Lord.
6Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of #1 Sam. 6:17; Jer. 47:1, 5; Zeph. 2:4Gaza, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they took captive the whole captivity
To deliver them up to Edom.
7#Jer. 47:1But I will send a fire upon the wall of Gaza,
Which shall devour its palaces.
8I will cut off the inhabitant #Jer. 47:5; Zeph. 2:4from Ashdod,
And the one who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;
I will #Ps. 81:14turn My hand against Ekron,
And #Is. 14:29–31; Jer. 47:1–7; Ezek. 25:16; Joel 3:4–8; Zeph. 2:4–7; Zech. 9:5–7the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,”
Says the Lord God.
9Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of #Is. 23:1–18; Jer. 25:22; Ezek. 26:2–4; Joel 3:4–8Tyre, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom,
And did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.
10But I will send a fire upon the wall of Tyre,
Which shall devour its palaces.”
11Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of #Is. 21:11; Jer. 49:8; Ezek. 25:12–14; Mal. 1:2–5Edom, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because he pursued his #Num. 20:14–21; 2 Chr. 28:17; Obad. 10–12brother with the sword,
And cast off all pity;
His anger tore perpetually,
And he kept his wrath forever.
12But #Jer. 49:7, 20; Obad. 9, 10I will send a fire upon Teman,
Which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.”
13Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of #Jer. 49:1; Ezek. 25:2; Zeph. 2:8, 9the people of Ammon, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they ripped open the women with child in Gilead,
That they might enlarge their territory.
14But I will kindle a fire in the wall of #Deut. 3:11; 1 Chr. 20:1; Jer. 49:2Rabbah,
And it shall devour its palaces,
#Ezek. 21:22; Amos 2:2Amid shouting in the day of battle,
And a tempest in the day of the whirlwind.
15#Jer. 49:3Their king shall go into captivity,
He and his princes together,”
Says the Lord.
