Exodus 2
2
Moses Is Born
1And #Ex. 6:16–20; Num. 26:59; 1 Chr. 23:14a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi. 2So the woman conceived and bore a son. And #Acts 7:20; Heb. 11:23when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months. 3But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of #Is. 18:2bulrushes for him, daubed it with #Gen. 14:10asphalt and #Gen. 6:14; Is. 34:9pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds #Is. 19:6by the river’s bank. 4#Ex. 15:20; Num. 26:59And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him.
5Then the #Ex. 7:15; Acts 7:21daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river. And her maidens walked along the riverside; and when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it. 6And when she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby wept. So she had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”
7Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”
8And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the maiden went and called the child’s mother. 9Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became #Acts 7:21her son. So she called his name Moses, saying, “Because I drew him out of the water.”
Moses Flees to Midian
11Now it came to pass in those days, #Acts 7:23, 24; Heb. 11:24–26when Moses was grown, that he went out to his brethren and looked at their burdens. And he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12So he looked this way and that way, and when he saw no one, he #Acts 7:24, 25killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13And #Acts 7:26–28when he went out the second day, behold, two Hebrew men #Prov. 25:8were fighting, and he said to the one who did the wrong, “Why are you striking your companion?”
14Then he said, #Gen. 19:9; Acts 7:27, 28“Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?”
So Moses #Judg. 6:27; Heb. 11:27feared and said, “Surely this thing is known!” 15When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But #Acts 7:29; Heb. 11:27Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of #Ex. 3:1Midian; and he sat down by #Gen. 24:11; 29:2; Ex. 15:27a well.
16#Ex. 3:1; 4:18; 18:12Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. #Gen. 24:11, 13, 19; 29:6–10; 1 Sam. 9:11And they came and drew water, and they filled the #Gen. 30:38troughs to water their father’s flock. 17Then the #Gen. 47:3; 1 Sam. 25:7shepherds came and #Gen. 26:19–21drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and #Gen. 29:3, 10watered their flock.
18When they came to #Num. 10:29Reuel their father, #Ex. 3:1; 4:18he said, “How is it that you have come so soon today?”
19And they said, “An Egyptian delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and he also drew enough water for us and watered the flock.”
20So he said to his daughters, “And where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may #Gen. 31:54; 43:25eat bread.”
21Then Moses was content to live with the man, and he gave #Ex. 4:25; 18:2Zipporah his daughter to Moses. 22And she bore him a son. He called his name #Ex. 4:20; 18:3, 4Gershom, for he said, “I have been #Gen. 23:4; Lev. 25:23; Acts 7:29; Heb. 11:13, 14a stranger in a foreign land.”
23Now it happened #Acts 7:34in the process of time that the king of Egypt died. Then the children of Israel #Deut. 26:7groaned because of the bondage, and they cried out; and #Ex. 3:7, 9; James 5:4their cry came up to God because of the bondage. 24So God #Ex. 6:5; Acts 7:34heard their groaning, and God #Gen. 15:13; 22:16–18; 26:2–5; 28:13–15; Ps. 105:8, 42remembered His #Gen. 12:1–3; 15:14; 17:1–14covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25And God #Ex. 4:31; Luke 1:25; Acts 7:34looked upon the children of Israel, and God #Ex. 3:7acknowledged them.
