“Every time I gave Israel a fresh start, wiped the slate clean and got them going again, Ephraim soon filled the slate with new sins, the treachery of Samaria written out in bold print. Two-faced and double-tongued, they steal you blind, pick you clean. It never crosses their mind that I keep account of their every crime. They’re mud-spattered head to toe with the residue of sin. I see who they are and what they’ve done. “They entertain the king with their evil circus, delight the princes with their acrobatic lies. They’re a bunch of overheated adulterers, like an oven that holds its heat From the kneading of the dough to the rising of the bread. On the royal holiday the princes get drunk on wine and the frenzy of the mocking mob. They’re like wood stoves, red-hot with lust. Through the night their passion is banked; in the morning it blazes up, flames hungrily licking. Murderous and volcanic, they incinerate their rulers. Their kings fall one by one, and no one pays any attention to me. “Ephraim mingles with the pagans, dissipating himself. Ephraim is half-baked. Strangers suck him dry but he doesn’t even notice. His hair has turned gray— he doesn’t notice. Bloated by arrogance, big as a house, Israel’s a public disgrace. Israel lumbers along oblivious to GOD, despite all the signs, ignoring GOD.

When I would have healed Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim was discovered, and the wickedness of Samaria: for they commit falsehood; and the thief cometh in, and the troop of robbers spoileth without. And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have beset them about; they are before my face. They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies. They are all adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker, who ceaseth from raising after he hath kneaded the dough, until it be leavened. In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners. For they have made ready their heart like an oven, whiles they lie in wait: their baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it burneth as a flaming fire. They are all hot as an oven, and have devoured their judges; all their kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth unto me. Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned. Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not. And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this.

It never enters their minds that I remember all their evil deeds. The bad things they do are all around them; they are right in front of me. “They make the king happy with their wickedness; their rulers are glad with their lies. But all of them are traitors. They are like an oven heated by a baker. While he mixes the dough, he does not need to stir up the fire. The kings get so drunk they get sick every day. The rulers become crazy with wine; they make agreements with those who do not know the true God. They burn like an oven; their hearts burn inside them. Israel is weak and feeble, like an old man, but he doesn’t know it. Israel’s pride will cause their defeat; they will not turn back to the LORD their God or look to him for help in all this.

They are all prisoners of their own wickedness, and their sin stares me in the face.” says, “They deceive the king with their wickedness and the rulers with their lies. They are all unfaithful to the king. Their anger is like an overheated oven. Their oven burns so hot that the baker could knead his bread at night until it rises in the morning and he still wouldn’t need to stoke the fire. On the king’s day of celebration , his officials are drunk with wine, and the king trusted the traitors. Their hearts are like an oven that burns with treachery. All night long, their anger smolders; then in the morning, it bursts into flame. Yes, they are all as hot as an oven, ready to consume their rulers. My people are like half-done flatbread, burnt on one side and raw dough on the other. Ephraim does not realize alliances with foreigners devoured his strength; even his hair has turned gray, but he has no clue. Israel’s arrogance has become his own accuser.
