Proverbs 20:1-3
Proverbs 20:1-3 English Standard Version Revision 2016 (ESV)
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. The terror of a king is like the growling of a lion; whoever provokes him to anger forfeits his life. It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling.
Proverbs 20:1-3 The Message (MSG)
Wine makes you mean, beer makes you quarrelsome— a staggering drunk is not much fun. Quick-tempered leaders are like mad dogs— cross them and they bite your head off. It’s a mark of good character to avert quarrels, but fools love to pick fights.
Proverbs 20:1-3 King James Version (KJV)
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: And whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: Whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul. It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: But every fool will be meddling.
Proverbs 20:1-3 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, And whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise. The terror of a king is like the growling of a lion; He who provokes him to anger forfeits his own life. Keeping away from strife is an honor for a man, But any fool will quarrel.
Proverbs 20:1-3 New Century Version (NCV)
Wine and beer make people loud and uncontrolled; it is not wise to get drunk on them. An angry king is like a roaring lion. Making him angry may cost you your life. Foolish people are always fighting, but avoiding quarrels will bring you honor.
Proverbs 20:1-3 American Standard Version (ASV)
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; And whosoever erreth thereby is not wise. The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: He that provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own life. It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife; But every fool will be quarrelling.
Proverbs 20:1-3 New International Version (NIV)
Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise. A king’s wrath strikes terror like the roar of a lion; those who anger him forfeit their lives. It is to one’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.
Proverbs 20:1-3 New King James Version (NKJV)
Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise. The wrath of a king is like the roaring of a lion; Whoever provokes him to anger sins against his own life. It is honorable for a man to stop striving, Since any fool can start a quarrel.
Proverbs 20:1-3 Amplified Bible (AMP)
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a riotous brawler; And whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise. [Prov 23:29, 30; Is 28:7; Hos 4:11] The terror of a king is like the roaring of a lion; Whoever provokes him to anger forfeits his own life. It is an honor for a man to keep away from strife [by handling situations with thoughtful foresight], But any fool will [start a] quarrel [without regard for the consequences].
Proverbs 20:1-3 New Living Translation (NLT)
Wine produces mockers; alcohol leads to brawls. Those led astray by drink cannot be wise. The king’s fury is like a lion’s roar; to rouse his anger is to risk your life. Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insist on quarreling.
Proverbs 20:1-3 The Passion Translation (TPT)
A drunkard is obnoxious, loud, and argumentative; you’re a fool to get intoxicated with strong drink. The rage of a king is like the roar of a lion. Do you really want to go and make him angry? A person of honor will put an argument to rest. Only the stupid want to pick a fight.
