Solving the Problem of Evil

There shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying and no more pain. - Rev 21:4

The biggest problem that we all face is the problem of evil. It is the problem of suffering, sorrow and death. Life’s leading problems can be characterized as those that arise from the evil that is prevalent in the world that we live in. No one is exempt from the crushing consequences of sin. There may be a temporary respite, but the effects catch up with us sooner or later and they seem to affect us just when we think that we have escaped from its repercussions. We live in a fallen world which has succumbed to evil and therefore sin abounds. With sin comes suffering.

Even a child, with the ability to think and reason for himself or herself, knows that sin is the cause of suffering in the world. So how do we overcome the burden of sin and evil? The Bible teaches that God has already solved the problem of evil. The work of Jesus was to overcome the bondage of sin and to have victory over evil. Through the power of God and the work of Jesus, we can claim victory over sin.

Some have twisted the truth and have propagated a false message that Christians will not face any suffering. Those who give in to this false teaching will end up with a faith that is shallow.

On the contrary, God often uses pain and suffering to draw us closer to Him by our dependence on Him. At the same time, God promises us two things as we face trials. Firstly, He promises eternal life (Mt 25:46). By definition, eternal life is freedom from death. It is the ultimate victory over evil. Secondly, He dwells in us. He carries us through life’s sorrows and pain. He bore our grief on the Cross. He has sent the Holy Spirit to provide comfort in the midst of our suffering. (11:28-30)

Thank You, Father, for solving the problem of evil once and for all. Give me the assurance of eternal life and the knowledge of Your presence in the problems I face today. Amen
