By the time John wrote this letter, he had spent decades thinking about what it means to love God. And after all those years, his conclusion was simple and profound: God is love. Love isn’t something God does — it’s who He is.
That truth changes everything. God’s commands (Deuteronomy 5) and His call to wholehearted devotion (Deuteronomy 6) aren’t about earning love; they flow from already being loved. Before you ever prayed, obeyed, or believed, God loved you first. His love isn’t conditional or fragile. It’s steady, sacrificial, and proven on the cross.
Love is meant to circulate — from God to us, and from us to others. When we forgive, serve, and show kindness, we’re not just being “nice.” We’re revealing the God who lives in us.
The more we experience God’s love, the more naturally it overflows to others. And that’s the mark of a follower of Jesus — not perfect performance, but perfecting love.
