Obedience Results in the Miraculous — Simple Trust Changes Everything
Teetering between utter exhaustion and great anticipation, Peter does what Jesus asks. In the process, He learns a valuable lesson about his own heart, who Jesus is, and the way God’s Kingdom works.
Peter goes along with Jesus’ request to start fishing again. He probably isn’t expecting a miracle here, but something about Jesus causes Peter’s heart to respond in hope. It is a sense of trust and expectation — silent but declarative. In Jesus’ presence, Peter feels an invitation, not just a request.
Many of us will experience a radical departure from the norm when Jesus interrupts regular life and asks us to do something specific. These moments have a twofold purpose. They reveal where our hearts are in our relationship with God, and they reveal God’s faithfulness toward us.
As Peter engages his faith and obeys Jesus’ request to launch out into the deep and let down the nets, something astonishing takes place. Previously empty, the nets are now filled with a catch, so full that the crew struggles to haul it in. This wasn’t just a great catch; it was most likely the best of their career. It is a life-changing encounter for Peter as he sees who stands before him.
Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. —Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)
Peter’s obedience results in the miraculous. Jesus demonstrates to Peter that simple trust can change everything. As they haul the catch on board, Peter sees that Jesus is more than a teacher. He is the Messiah. This realization changes Peter. No longer just a fisherman, he is now a friend of God. He will never be the same. From this moment forward, Peter follows Jesus.
