7 Day Devotional Responding to a Global Pandemic

DAY 4 OF 7

The Great Commission

Jesus’s words in Mark’s gospel have come to be what we refer to as the ‘Great Commission’. This is a clear command given by Jesus to his disciples to preach the message of Christ to the whole world. Jesus’s command is applicable to all who believe in him, and not just his disciples.

It is important to note that Jesus’s words do not include any exceptions or conditions. Jesus does not say: preach the gospel to all creation, except when you encounter persecution; or preach the gospel to all creation except when you’re pursuing your career goals and ambitions; or preach the gospel to all creation except in the instance of a COVID19 pandemic. No! Jesus gives this command to the disciples (and to us) knowing full well that they would face countless trials and tribulations along the way. Nevertheless, sharing the gospel must never stop!

Good News

I find it so encouraging to know that God uses persecution to advance the gospel and to bless the world. Make no mistake. Sickness, persecution, and suffering will always exist in this fallen world; however, this provides an immense opportunity for the church to bring light and hope through the Good News of Jesus Christ.

The gospel brings joy! Christ alone has the power to deliver us from the enemy. Christ alone has the power to heal our minds and our bodies. Christ alone has the power to forgive our sins and to redeem us back to God. No matter the trial and suffering ahead, with Christ we have hope and we have joy.

No days off

Although many stores, offices and churches are closed globally, the gospel should never stop! Many of our families, friends and online communities are scared and lonely. Humanity is in desperate need of hope and sharing the message of Christ will bring eternal joy and life to this bleak world. This season is not a day off for Christians. We must endeavour to communicate the gospel in every way possible.

How can we evangelise whilst social distancing? Here are three helpful ways:

Living out the gospel

One of the most effective evangelistic tools is our lives. As Christians, the world is constantly scrutinising our actions against our beliefs; therefore, how we live can demonstrate our faith and hope in Christ. Our confidence in the power of God must be visible for all to see. Like Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). People will be amazed by how calm and confident you are at this time. If we react to global tragedies the way the world does, we will be failing as witnesses of Christ.

Social Media

You really do not need to be a professional blogger or televangelist to share your faith on social media. All you need is a love for God and a love for people. You can use social media to share your personal testimony. You’ll be surprised of how positively people respond to your personal experience with Christ. Be creative. For example, you could explain the gospel in a one-minute video, share relevant scripture verses, or invite friends to the various online activities that your church is running. Let your message be consistent across all platforms. Be nice and stay away from promoting false information or conflict.
