One Sided Marriage

DAY 5 OF 6

Signs Of a One-Sided Marriage

Are you in a one-sided marriage? Do you think you are but are not sure? As we look deeper into this, remember that your hope is in God and not your spouse (Romans 12:12). Now let’s look at a few of the signs that you may be in a one-sided marriage.

  • You do not feel like you are a priority to your spouse. There are times in marriage when we have no doubt that we are a priority for our spouse. They are attentive and want to please you. In a one-sided marriage, they are busy when you want to be with them. Even if you want to do something that you know that they love, they are still busy.
  • You are doing all the work. You start the conversations. You send nice texts. You plan the dates. They never do any of these.
  • You are stressed. You do not feel loved and continually work on getting them to show love back to you.
  • You are justifying their behavior. When friends question the way your spouse treats you, you make up excuses for them.
  • You are always the one apologizing. Your spouse makes you think things are your fault and never takes responsibility. On the other hand, you find yourself apologizing for everything.
  • You are kept out of their life. You share about your day, your friends, your family, yet your spouse shares nothing with you.

As you look through the above list, what resonated with you? How many of the six signs fit your marriage?

This list is not designed to discourage you. Remember that you can trust God and that your hope is in Him. This list is to inform you and to help you look realistically at your marriage. If things are going to get better, you are the one who is going to have to do things differently. Things can change. There is hope but unless you take the first step, you will never see things change.

We believe in a big God that can do big things. If you are fearful, remember that you can trust Him always (Psalm 56:7). As you get ready for the practical steps in tomorrow’s devotional, be praying for God to give you wisdom and strength.

Today’s Challenge:

  • Bring all your concerns, challenges and pain to God. Ask Him to lead you. Ask Him to guide your words and actions. Ask Him to give you hope - not in yourself or your spouse, but in Him.

About this Plan

One Sided Marriage

When one spouse has control but does little or nothing for the marriage, while the other spouse pours their time, emotion, effort, and energy into the marriage, we have a one-sided marriage. Join us in this five-day plan by Dr. Kim Kimberling to take a deep dive into what God says about marriage and how to deal with this issue in a way that honors Him.
