Now What?

DAY 2 OF 5

One thing you might be presented with when you’re looking for the next steps to take with Jesus is baptism. Where does that come from? What is it? And why is it important? Well, let’s check out the next part of the Great Commission to see what it says.

…“baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”.

Jesus calls us to be baptized. Why? Baptism is an outward declaration of an inward decision to follow Jesus. And in our decision to follow Jesus, we are growing the Kingdom of God!

We see in Matthew chapter 3 that Jesus Himself was baptized. This is really important and cool because we get to see HOW Jesus was baptized, by immersion (fully dunked underwater), and this is an example He was setting for His people to follow.

Baptism is a moment for you to choose Jesus in front of your family and friends. It’s a moment for you to shout from the rooftops that you’ve accepted Jesus into your heart and you put your trust in Him through the act of baptism.

It’s also a cool parallel to the death and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus died for our sins and then rose to give us a chance to have life eternal with Him. When we are baptized, we are leaving our old ways behind and choosing God’s ways.

That can look like a lot of different things in our lives. It can be choosing to honor your family and friends with your words and actions. It can be choosing to not participate in behavior that previously you wouldn’t have had a problem with, but now that you follow Jesus, you realize that it isn’t good for you. It can be choosing to spend time reading your Bible. Or prioritizing going to student ministry programming. All of these things are ways we are leaving our old life behind and choosing to live our life in accordance with how God asks us to.

If you’re feeling ready to get baptized, let your youth pastor, small group leader or someone at home know! We’ll be here ready to celebrate your decision and make it happen!
