P. H. Waddell

Peter Hately Waddell was born in Stirlingshire in 1817, and was educated in Glasgow. He joined the Free Church of Scotland and was ordained as minister of Rhynie in Aberdeenshire, and then nto Girvan in Ayrshire. Objecting to rigid Calvinism he founded an independent chapel at Girvan styled ‘the Church of the Future’. In 1862, he went to Glasgow, as an independent minister at the city hall, until 1870 when they erected a church building in East Howard Street, Glasgow. In 1888, he joined the established church, and he retired in 1890. He died in Dowanhll in 1891.

The Psalms in Scots

Waddell is most famous for his translation of the Psalms directly from Hebrew into Scots. It was published in 1871 as The Psalms: frae Hebrew intil Scottis. This work was followed in 1879 by Isaiah: frae Hebrew intil Scottis.
