Judas Plans to Betray Jesus
1Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching. 2The chief priests and the scribes were trying to find a way to away with Jesus, because they were afraid of the people.
3Then Satan entered into Judas, called Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve. 4Judas went away and talked with the chief priests and officers of temple guard about how he might deliver Jesus to them. 5They were delighted and agreed to give him silver. 6He acknowledged and began looking for an opportunity to deliver Jesus to them when there were no crowds.
The Last Supper
7The day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb must be sacrificed. 8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, āYāall Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.ā
9They asked him, āWhere do you want us to prepare for it?ā
10He said to them, āAs yāall enter the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet yāall. Yāall follow him into the house that he enters, 11and yāall tell the master of the house, āThe Teacher asks you, āWhere is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with my disciples?āā 12He will show yāall a large, furnished upper room. Yāall make preparations there.ā
13They went and found things just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
14When the hour came, he reclined at the table, and the apostles with him. 15He said to them, āI have desiringly-desired to eat this Passover with yāall before I suffer. 16For I tell yāall, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the Empire of God.ā 17He took the cup, and after giving thanks, he said, āYāall take this and share it among yourselves, 18For I tell yāall, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the Empire of God comes.ā
19He took bread, and after giving thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, āThis is my body which is given for yāall. Yāall do this in remembrance of me.ā
20In the same way, after they had eaten, he took the cup and said, āThis cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for yāall. 21But look, the hand of the one betraying me is with mine on the table. 22For truly, the Son of Humanity will go as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom he is betrayed!ā
23They began to question among themselves which of them it could be who would do this. 24A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was to be considered the greatest.
25But Jesus said to them, āThe kings of the ethnic groups lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called āBenefactors.ā 26But it is not to be like that with yāall. Rather, the greatest among yāall should become like the youngest, and one leader like a servant. 27For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table, or one who serves? Isnāt it the one who reclines at the table? But I am among yāall as one who serves.
28 āYāall are the ones who have remained with me in my trials. 29And I bestow on yāall an empire, even as my Father bestowed one on me, 30so that yāall may eat and drink at my table in my empire. Yāall will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.ā
31 āSimon, Simon, look! Satan has demanded to sift yāall like wheat, 32but I have prayed for you, that your faith wouldnāt fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.ā
33But Peter said to him, āLord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!ā
34Jesus replied, āI tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied that you know me three times.ā
35Then he said to them, āWhen I sent yāall out without money belt, bag, or sandals, did yāall lack anything?ā
āNothing,ā they answered.
36Then he said to them, āBut now, whoever has a money belt, take it, and also a bag. And whoever doesnāt have a sword should sell their robe and buy one. 37For I tell yāall, that which is written must be completed in me: āHe was counted among the transgressors.ā#Isaiah 53:12 For what was written about me is reaching completion.ā
38They said, āLord, look, here are two swords.ā
He said to them, āThat is sufficient.ā
Jesus Continues His Pattern of Prayer
39Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives, as he routinely did, and this disciples followed him. 40When he reached the place, he said to them, āYāall pray that you donāt fall into temptation.ā
41He withdrew about a stoneās throw away from them, he knelt down, and prayed, 42saying, āFather, if you are willing, take this cup from me. Yet not my will, but yours be done.ā
43Then an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. 44Being in agony, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling down on the ground.
45When he got up from prayer, he went to the disciples and found them sleeping, exhausted from their sorrow. 46He said to them, āWhy are yāall sleeping? Yāall get up and pray so that yāall wonāt fall into temptation.ā
Judas Leads the Crowd to Jesus
47While he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd appeared with the man called Judas, one of the twelve, leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss him, 48but Jesus said to him, āJudas, are you using a kiss to betray the Son of Humanity?ā
49When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they asked, āLord, should we strike with the sword?ā 50And then one of them struck the high priestās servant, cutting off his right ear.
51But Jesus responded, āStop this, yāall!ā Then he touched the manās ear and healed him. 52Jesus said to the chief priests, officers of the temple guard, and elders, who had come against him, āHave yāall come out with swords and clubs as if I were an outlaw? 53Every day I was with yāall in the temple, and yāall never laid a hand on me. But this is yāallās hour, and this is the reign of darkness.ā
Peter Panics
54They seized him, led him away, and brought him into the house of the high priest. But Peter was following at a distance. 55When some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56A servant girl saw him as he sat in the firelight. She looked intently at him and said, āThis man was with him too!ā
57But he denied it, saying, āWoman, I donāt know him.ā
58After a little while someone else saw him and said, āYou are one of them too!ā
But Peter answered, āMan, I am not!ā
59After about one hour passed, another insisted, āCertainly this man was with him, for he is a Galilean!ā
60But Peter said, āMan, I donāt know what youāre talking about!ā Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him, āBefore the rooster crows today you will deny me three times.ā 62Then he went outside and wept bitterly.
63The men who held Jesus begin mocking and beating him. 64They blindfolded him and kept demanding, āProphesy who hit you!ā 65And they said many other blasphemous things against him. Jesus Before the Jewish Leaders
66When daylight came, the council of the elders of the people, the chief priests, and scribes gathered together, and they led him away to their council, saying, 67āIf you are the Christ, tell us.ā
But he said to them, āIf I do tell yāall, yāall wonāt believe, 68and if I ask a question, yāall wontā answer. 69From now on, the Son of Humanity will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.ā
70They all said, āAre you then the Son of God?ā
He said to them, āYāall say that I am.ā
71They said, āWhy do we need any more testimony? Weāve heard it from his own mouth!ā
