Psalms 90:1-17 NIV (New International Version)

Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.” A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death— they are like the new grass of the morning: In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered. We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. If only we knew the power of your anger! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due. Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Relent, LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants. Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands.

Psalms 90:1-17 ESV (English Standard Version 2025)

Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You return man to dust and say, “Return, O children of man!” For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers. For we are brought to an end by your anger; by your wrath we are dismayed. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. For all our days pass away under your wrath; we bring our years to an end like a sigh. The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. Who considers the power of your anger, and your wrath according to the fear of you? So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants! Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil. Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!

Psalms 90:1-17 NLT (New Living Translation)

Lord, through all the generations you have been our home! Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God. You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals!” For you, a thousand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours. You sweep people away like dreams that disappear. They are like grass that springs up in the morning. In the morning it blooms and flourishes, but by evening it is dry and withered. We wither beneath your anger; we are overwhelmed by your fury. You spread out our sins before you— our secret sins—and you see them all. We live our lives beneath your wrath, ending our years with a groan. Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away. Who can comprehend the power of your anger? Your wrath is as awesome as the fear you deserve. Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. O LORD, come back to us! How long will you delay? Take pity on your servants! Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. Give us gladness in proportion to our former misery! Replace the evil years with good. Let us, your servants, see you work again; let our children see your glory. And may the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful. Yes, make our efforts successful!

Psalms 90:1-17 CSB (Christian Standard Bible)

Lord, you have been our refuge  in every generation.  Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, you are God.  You return mankind to the dust, saying, “Return, descendants of Adam.”  For in your sight a thousand years are like yesterday that passes by, like a few hours of the night.  You end their lives;  they sleep.  They are like grass that grows in the morning — in the morning it sprouts and grows; by evening it withers and dries up.  For we are consumed by your anger; we are terrified by your wrath.  You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.  For all our days ebb away under your wrath; we end our years like a sigh.  Our lives last  seventy years or, if we are strong, eighty years. Even the best of them are   struggle and sorrow; indeed, they pass quickly and we fly away.  Who understands the power of your anger? Your wrath matches the fear that is due you.  Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.  , LORD  — how long? Turn and have compassion on your servants.  Satisfy us in the morning with your faithful love so that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days.  Make us rejoice for as many days as you have humbled us, for as many years as we have seen adversity.  Let your work be seen by your servants, and your splendor by their children.  Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish for us the work of our hands — establish the work of our hands!

Psalms 90:1-17 KJV (King James Version)

LORD, thou hast been our dwelling place In all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. Thou turnest man to destruction; And sayest, Return, ye children of men. For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday When it is past, and as a watch in the night. Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: In the morning they are like grass which groweth up. In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; In the evening it is cut down, and withereth. For we are consumed by thine anger, And by thy wrath are we troubled. Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, Our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: We spend our years as a tale that is told. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; And if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, Yet is their strength labour and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Who knoweth the power of thine anger? Even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath. So teach us to number our days, That we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Return, O LORD, how long? And let it repent thee concerning thy servants. O satisfy us early with thy mercy; That we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, And the years wherein we have seen evil. Let thy work appear unto thy servants, And thy glory unto their children. And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: And establish thou the work of our hands upon us; Yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

Psalms 90:1-17 MSG (The Message)

God, it seems you’ve been our home forever; long before the mountains were born, Long before you brought earth itself to birth, from “once upon a time” to “kingdom come”—you are God. So don’t return us to mud, saying, “Back to where you came from!” Patience! You’ve got all the time in the world—whether a thousand years or a day, it’s all the same to you. Are we no more to you than a wispy dream, no more than a blade of grass That springs up gloriously with the rising sun and is cut down without a second thought? Your anger is far and away too much for us; we’re at the end of our rope. You keep track of all our sins; every misdeed since we were children is entered in your books. All we can remember is that frown on your face. Is that all we’re ever going to get? We live for seventy years or so (with luck we might make it to eighty), And what do we have to show for it? Trouble. Toil and trouble and a marker in the graveyard. Who can make sense of such rage, such anger against the very ones who fear you? Oh! Teach us to live well! Teach us to live wisely and well! Come back, GOD—how long do we have to wait?— and treat your servants with kindness for a change. Surprise us with love at daybreak; then we’ll skip and dance all the day long. Make up for the bad times with some good times; we’ve seen enough evil to last a lifetime. Let your servants see what you’re best at— the ways you rule and bless your children. And let the loveliness of our Lord, our God, rest on us, confirming the work that we do. Oh, yes. Affirm the work that we do!

Psalms 90:1-17 NASB2020 (New American Standard Bible - NASB)

Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were born Or You gave birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. ¶You turn mortals back into dust And say, “Return, you sons of mankind.” For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it passes by, Or like a watch in the night. You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep; In the morning they are like grass that sprouts anew. In the morning it flourishes and sprouts anew; Toward evening it wilts and withers away. ¶For we have been consumed by Your anger, And we have been terrified by Your wrath. You have placed our guilty deeds before You, Our hidden sins in the light of Your presence. For all our days have dwindled away in Your fury; We have finished our years like a sigh. As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, Or if due to strength, eighty years, Yet their pride is only trouble and tragedy; For it quickly passes, and we disappear. Who understands the power of Your anger And Your fury, according to the fear that is due You? So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom. ¶Do return, LORD; how long will it be? And be sorry for Your servants. Satisfy us in the morning with Your graciousness, That we may sing for joy and rejoice all our days. Make us glad according to the days You have afflicted us, And the years we have seen evil. Let Your work appear to Your servants And Your majesty to their children. May the kindness of the Lord our God be upon us; And confirm for us the work of our hands; Yes, confirm the work of our hands.

Psalms 90:1-17 AMP (Amplified Bible)

Lord, You have been our dwelling place [our refuge, our sanctuary, our stability] in all generations. Before the mountains were born Or before You had given birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are [the eternal] God. ¶You turn man back to dust, And say, “Return [to the earth], O children of [mortal] men!” For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it is past, Or as a watch in the night. [2 Pet 3:8] You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep [forgotten as soon as they are gone]; In the morning they are like grass which grows anew— In the morning it flourishes and springs up; In the evening it wilts and withers away. ¶For we have been consumed by Your anger And by Your wrath we have been terrified. You have placed our wickedness before you, Our secret sins [which we tried to conceal, You have placed] in the [revealing] light of Your presence. For all our days pass away in Your wrath; We have finished our years like a whispered sigh. [Num 14:26-35] The days of our life are seventy years— Or even, if because of strength, eighty years; Yet their pride [in additional years] is only labor and sorrow, For it is soon gone and we fly away. Who understands the power of Your anger? [Who connects this brevity of life among us with Your judgment of sin?] And Your wrath, [who connects it] with the [reverent] fear that is due You? So teach us to number our days, That we may cultivate and bring to You a heart of wisdom. ¶Turn, O LORD [from Your fierce anger]; how long will it be? Be compassionate toward Your servants—revoke Your sentence. O satisfy us with Your lovingkindness in the morning [now, before we grow older], That we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad in proportion to the days You have afflicted us, And the years we have suffered evil. Let Your work [the signs of Your power] be revealed to Your servants And Your [glorious] majesty to their children. And let the [gracious] favor of the Lord our God be on us; Confirm for us the work of our hands— Yes, confirm the work of our hands.

Psalms 90:1-17 NET (New English Translation)

O Lord, you have been our protector through all generations! Even before the mountains came into existence, or you brought the world into being, you were the eternal God. You make mankind return to the dust, and say, “Return, O people!” Yes, in your eyes a thousand years are like yesterday that quickly passes, or like one of the divisions of the nighttime. You bring their lives to an end and they “fall asleep.” In the morning they are like the grass that sprouts up; in the morning it glistens and sprouts up; at evening time it withers and dries up. Yes, we are consumed by your anger; we are terrified by your wrath. You are aware of our sins; you even know about our hidden sins. Yes, throughout all our days we experience your raging fury; the years of our lives pass quickly, like a sigh. The days of our lives add up to seventy years, or eighty, if one is especially strong. But even one’s best years are marred by trouble and oppression. Yes, they pass quickly and we fly away. Who can really fathom the intensity of your anger? Your raging fury causes people to fear you. So teach us to consider our mortality, so that we might live wisely. Turn back toward us, O LORD! How long must this suffering last? Have pity on your servants! Satisfy us in the morning with your loyal love! Then we will shout for joy and be happy all our days! Make us happy in proportion to the days you have afflicted us, in proportion to the years we have experienced trouble! May your servants see your work! May their sons see your majesty! May our sovereign God extend his favor to us! Make our endeavors successful! Yes, make them successful!
