# Cited from Deut. 8:3; [ John 4:34 ] “‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
5 # Luke 4:9 Then the devil took him to #ch. 27:53; Neh. 11:18; Isa. 48:2; 52:1; Rev. 11:2; [Ps. 46:4; 48:1; Rev. 21:2; 22:19]the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

and
“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
7Jesus said to him, “Again #ver. 4, 10 it is written, #Cited from Deut. 6:16 ‘You shall not #[Isa. 7:12]put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8#Luke 4:5Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, #See 1 Chr. 21:1 Satan! For #ver. 4, 7 it is written,
# Cited from Deut. 6:13 “‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and # 1 Sam. 7:3 him only shall you serve.’”
11Then the devil left him, and behold, #ch. 26:53; Luke 22:43angels came and were ministering to him.
Jesus Begins His Ministry
12Now when he heard that #ch. 14:3; Mark 1:14; Luke 3:19, 20; [John 3:24] John had been arrested, #Luke 4:14he withdrew into Galilee. 13And leaving #See ch. 2:23 Nazareth he went and lived in #[ch. 9:1] Capernaum by #John 6:1 the sea, in the territory of #Josh. 19:32-34Zebulun and Naphtali, 14#See ch. 1:22so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

and for those dwelling in the region and #Job 3:5; Ps. 23:4; Amos 5:8shadow of death,
on them a light has dawned.”
17 # Mark 1:14 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, #ch. 3:2“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”#4:17 Or the kingdom of heaven has come near

18 # For ver. 18-22, see Mark 1:16-20; [ Luke 5:2-11; John 1:40-42 ] While walking by #ver. 13the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you #ch. 13:47fishers of men.”#4:19 The Greek word anthropoi refers here to both men and women 20Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
