Psalms 11:1-7 - Compare All Versions

Psalms 11:1-7 NIV (New International Version)

In the LORD I take refuge. How then can you say to me: “Flee like a bird to your mountain. For look, the wicked bend their bows; they set their arrows against the strings to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart. When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD is on his heavenly throne. He observes everyone on earth; his eyes examine them. The LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion. On the wicked he will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot. For the LORD is righteous, he loves justice; the upright will see his face.

Psalms 11:1-7 ESV (English Standard Version 2025)

In the LORD I take refuge; how can you say to my soul, Flee like a bird to your mountain, for behold, the wicked bend the bow; they have fitted their arrow to the string to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart; if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD’s throne is in heaven; his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man. The LORD tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence. Let him rain coals on the wicked; fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup. For the LORD is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face.

Psalms 11:1-7 NLT (New Living Translation)

I trust in the LORD for protection. So why do you say to me, “Fly like a bird to the mountains for safety! The wicked are stringing their bows and fitting their arrows on the bowstrings. They shoot from the shadows at those whose hearts are right. The foundations of law and order have collapsed. What can the righteous do?” But the LORD is in his holy Temple; the LORD still rules from heaven. He watches everyone closely, examining every person on earth. The LORD examines both the righteous and the wicked. He hates those who love violence. He will rain down blazing coals and burning sulfur on the wicked, punishing them with scorching winds. For the righteous LORD loves justice. The virtuous will see his face.

Psalms 11:1-7 CSB (Christian Standard Bible)

I have taken refuge in the  LORD.  How can you say to me, “Escape to the mountains  like a bird!  For look, the wicked string bows; they put their arrows on bowstrings to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.  When the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? ”  The LORD is in his holy temple;  the LORD  — his throne is in heaven.  His eyes watch; his gaze  examines everyone.  The LORD examines the righteous, but he hates the wicked and  those who love violence.  Let him rain burning coals  and sulfur on the wicked; let a scorching wind be the portion in their cup.  For the LORD is righteous; he loves righteous deeds. The upright will see his face.

Psalms 11:1-7 KJV (King James Version)

In the LORD put I my trust: How say ye to my soul, flee as a bird to your mountain? For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, That they may privily shoot at the upright in heart. If the foundations be destroyed, What can the righteous do? The LORD is in his holy temple, The LORD's throne is in heaven: His eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men. The LORD trieth the righteous: But the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth. Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: This shall be the portion of their cup. For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; His countenance doth behold the upright.

Psalms 11:1-7 NKJV (New King James Version)

In the LORD I put my trust; How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your mountain”? For look! The wicked bend their bow, They make ready their arrow on the string, That they may shoot secretly at the upright in heart. If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do? The LORD is in His holy temple, The LORD’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men. The LORD tests the righteous, But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates. Upon the wicked He will rain coals; Fire and brimstone and a burning wind Shall be the portion of their cup. For the LORD is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.

Psalms 11:1-7 MSG (The Message)

I’ve already run for dear life straight to the arms of GOD. So why would I run away now when you say, “Run to the mountains; the evil bows are bent, the wicked arrows Aimed to shoot under cover of darkness at every heart open to God. The bottom’s dropped out of the country; good people don’t have a chance”? But GOD hasn’t moved to the mountains; his holy address hasn’t changed. He’s in charge, as always, his eyes taking everything in, his eyelids Unblinking, examining Adam’s flesh and blood inside and out, not missing a thing. He tests the good and the bad alike; if anyone cheats, God’s outraged. Fail the test and you’re out, out in a hail of firestones, Drinking from a canteen filled with hot desert wind. GOD’s business is putting things right; he loves getting the lines straight, Setting us straight. Once we’re standing tall, we can look him straight in the eye.

Psalms 11:1-7 NASB2020 (New American Standard Bible - NASB)

In the LORD I take refuge; How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your mountain? “For, behold, the wicked bend the bow, They have set their arrow on the string To shoot in darkness at the upright in heart. “If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do?” ¶The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD’S throne is in heaven; His eyes see, His eyelids test the sons of mankind. The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked, And His soul hates one who loves violence. He will rain coals of fire upon the wicked, And brimstone and burning wind will be the portion of their cup. For the LORD is righteous, He loves righteousness; The upright will see His face.

Psalms 11:1-7 AMP (Amplified Bible)

In the LORD I take refuge [and put my trust]; How can you say to me, “Flee like a bird to your mountain; For look, the wicked are bending the bow; They take aim with their arrow on the string To shoot [by stealth] in darkness at the upright in heart. “If the foundations [of a godly society] are destroyed, What can the righteous do?” ¶The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD’S throne is in heaven. His eyes see, His eyelids test the children of men. [Acts 7:49; Rev 4:2] The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked, And His soul hates the [malevolent] one who loves violence. [James 1:12] Upon the wicked (godless) He will rain coals of fire; Fire and brimstone and a dreadful scorching wind will be the portion of their cup [of doom]. For the LORD is [absolutely] righteous, He loves righteousness (virtue, morality, justice); The upright shall see His face.

Psalms 11:1-7 NET (New English Translation)

In the LORD I have taken shelter. How can you say to me, “Flee to a mountain like a bird! For look, the wicked prepare their bows, they put their arrows on the strings, to shoot in the darkness at the morally upright. When the foundations are destroyed, what can the godly accomplish?” The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD’s throne is in heaven. His eyes watch; his eyes examine all people. The LORD approves of the godly, but he hates the wicked and those who love to do violence. May the LORD rain down burning coals and brimstone on the wicked! A whirlwind is what they deserve! Certainly the LORD is just; he rewards godly deeds; the upright will experience his favor.
