The Gospel of Matthew

Gospel author Matthew shows that Jesus is a direct descendant of Abraham by presenting Jesus’s genealogical record, then offers his account of Jesus’s birth.

Matthew 1

The Magi visit Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Afterwards, Joseph takes Mary and Jesus to Egypt to escape Herod’s decree. After Herod dies, they return to Nazareth.

Matthew 2

Matthew 3

Jesus is tempted in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights. Afterwards, Jesus returns to Galilee, where He begins teaching, gathering disciples, and healing the sick.

Matthew 4

Jesus begins His Sermon on the Mount with the beatitudes, then preaches about salt and light.

Matthew 5:1-16

Jesus continues His Sermon on the Mount, teaching a better way to fulfill God’s law: by dealing with the heart.

Matthew 5:17-48

Jesus teaches about giving to the needy, prayer, and fasting.

Matthew 6:1-18

Jesus teaches about storing up treasures in Heaven, and about trusting in the Heavenly Father to provide.

Matthew 6:19-34

Jesus teaches about judging others, seeking God, and false prophets.

Matthew 7

Jesus heals a man’s leprosy, then heals the servant of a Roman officer.

Matthew 8:1-13

Jesus heals the mother-in-law of His disciple Peter, then calms a storm, then heals two men who had been possessed by demons.

Matthew 8:14-34

Jesus heals a paralyzed man, then confronts Pharisees, then invites Matthew to be His disciple, then answers a question posed by John the Baptist.

Matthew 9:1-17

Jesus heals a sick woman, then raises a girl from the dead, then heals two blind men, then casts out a demon from a mute man.

Matthew 9:18-38

Jesus gives His 12 disciples authority, then sends them out.

Matthew 10:1-23

Jesus continues instructing His 12 disciples.

Matthew 10:23-42

Jesus speaks about John the Baptist, about unrepentant towns, and about knowing the Father through the Son, then invites people to follow Him.

Matthew 11

Jesus discusses the Sabbath with Pharisees.

Matthew 12:1-21

Jesus casts out a demon from a blind and mute man, then teaches about blasphemy, the fruits of the heart, peoples’ desire for signs, and relationships.

Matthew 12:22-50

Jesus tells parables about the sower and the seed, weeds, mustard seed, and yeast.

Matthew 13:1-35

Jesus continues to teach in parables (hidden treasure, the pearl of great price, and the fisherman’s net), then returns to Nazareth.

Matthew 13:36-58

Herod has John beheaded. Jesus miraculously feeds the 5,000, then later walks to His disciples on the water.

Matthew 14

Jesus teaches about the things that defile a person.

Matthew 15:1-20

Jesus heals a demon-possessed girl, then heals many sick people, then miraculously feeds 4,000 people.

Matthew 15:21-39

The Pharisees demand a sign from Jesus. Peter declares Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus predicts his death and resurrection to His disciples, then explains the true cost of discipleship.

Matthew 16

Jesus is transfigured on a mountain and honored by His Father. Then casts a demon out of a boy, again predicts his death, then teaches Peter by discussing taxes.
