Manda (Tanzania)

Psalms

The first part of the Scriptures in chiManda (Manda) was the liturgical Psalter, called Zaburi sya Daud (Psalms of David). It was translated by William Percival Johnson and Thomas H. Hicks of the Universities' Mission to Central Africa (UMCA), assisted by nationals.

Gospels

Matthew chapters 1 to 11 was translated by William Percival Johnson of the Universities' Mission to Central Africa, assiste d by nationals. This was published by the UMCA Press in 1914.

The four Gospels were completed in 1928 as Maevangel Ncheche, and published by the British and Foreign Bible Society. This was a tentative edition translated by William Percival Johnson and Thomas H. Hicks oft the Universities' Mission to Central Africa. The proofs were read by A.F. Matthew and Mary W. Bulley (Universities' Mission to Central Africa). A leaflet loosely inserted gives a translation of certain Manda words into Chawa, a neighbouring language. It was hoped that by this means the version could be used by both tribes.

New Testament

The full New Testament was published in 1937 as Kilagano kya Hino kya Bambo witu nu Njokosi witu Yesu Kristo. The four Gospels from 1928 were revised were revised, and the remaining books were translated by T.H. Hicks, assisted by nationals. It was published in standard orthography.
