The actions of every human being will one day be placed in two categories: what mattered and what didn’t. Paul describes each person’s works in 1 Corinthians 3:12 as “gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, [and] straw.” He continues by saying a fire will test the quality of the work. What does fire do to gold, silver, and precious stones? It refines. What does it do to wood, hay, and straw? It consumes.

How, then, can we know if our work is significant? Jesus answers this in John 15:5. As a branch cannot survive without being attached to the vine, we too must be attached to God. This starts with recognizing His presence in us and our need for Him. If a physical body needs water daily to survive, one’s soul depends on the Spirit of God for survival. “Apart from [Jesus], you can do nothing.”

Jesus models for His followers what daily dependence and abiding in God looks like through His spiritual disciplines: prayer and fasting in the wilderness (Matthew 4:2), times of solitude with the Father (Matthew 14:23) and living a life of worship and surrender (Matthew 26:42). It is only through our connection with the eternal God that we can do anything of eternal significance.
