Let Your Light ShineSample

Let Your Light Shine

DAY 1 OF 5

Would you like to reach more people with the vision and mission of your ministry? Would you like to perform more services impacting more people through your ministry? Would you like to expand the reach of your books, products, or audio messages to bring greater impact to people's lives? Would you like more volunteers to join you in spreading your message and ministry? Would you like to add new initiatives to your current ministry in order to positively affect a greater group of people?

I could go on and on with the “Would you” questions. But I won’t. You get the point. The answer is simply, “Yes.”

Those of us in nonprofit ministries (whether that is a ministry, mission, church, or even a speaking/writing platform) would always like to increase the number of those we impact for good. That’s why we do what we do. We believe in our vision, mission, and services. If we didn’t, we would leave and go make a lot more money in the for-profit sector. Right? Right.

So how do we do this?

How do we reach more, grow bigger, and expand our impact?

Well, you might not like the answer I’m about to tell you. How do I know you might not like my answer? Because when I’ve told other people this answer, I’ve seen the scowl that comes upon their faces—or I’ve heard the reticence seep into their tone of voice. When I teach this content, I always have students come up to me afterward and admit that they almost skipped this session because it was called "Marketing Your Ministry." And everyone knows that “marketing” and “ministry” shouldn’t be said in the same sentence. Isn’t that sacrilege, after all? Marketing and ministry simply do not, and cannot, go together.

Or should they?

Aren’t we supposed to be more spiritual than that? George Muller, Hudson Taylor, and Martin Luther didn’t carry out marketing strategies. Jesus certainly didn’t either. So, obviously, neither should we.

Or should we?

Take a moment to read Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

Marketing is all about letting your light shine. Letting the light of your ministry, mission, or church shine. It’s about telling the stories of what your good works are and how lives have been impacted, so that God is glorified and others are encouraged to join with you in bringing about even more good works for Him.

Letting your light shine is the essence of your calling as a marketer and fundraiser. It helps you do more ministry and Jesus Himself set the example for us. When we follow His example, we will benefit from His wisdom. Together, we’ll go through specific ways you can do this in order to expand the reach of your ministry and bring greater glory to God.
