Hail To The Chief: Presidential Speeches And The BibleSample
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd President of the U.S.
In the State of the Union address, only one month after the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt explained that the Allies valued human life. He cited the biblical passage in Genesis that explains that humankind was created by God. This verse was juxtaposed against what he called the enemy's "unholy contempt for the human race." This strong rhetoric would encourage listeners to see the Allies as protectors of life.

About this Plan
Where have many commanders in chief turned to for inspiration, comfort, and direction at critical crossroads of American history? The Bible. American Presidents have frequently cited the Bible in inaugural addresses, State of the Union speeches, and beyond. These Bible verses have been used to call citizens to action, as inspiration to a country divided or at war, and sometimes as a comfort in times of national tragedy. This eight-day plan gives you a glimpse at different presidents, including Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy, and how they incorporated the Bible into their speeches.
