Living Thankful, Living SoberSample

Living Thankful, Living Sober

DAY 1 OF 5

Gratitude is not dependent on our circumstances. Rather, it is rooted in the goodness of God. Just as the seasons shift and the leaves change color in fall, life around us is always changing, sometimes in ways that feel uncertain. But even when life feels uncertain, God’s will for us is to be thankful. Thankfulness shifts our focus from what we lack to the abundance of blessings already present in our lives.

Think about Paul and Silas in Acts 16. They had just been beaten, chained, and thrown into prison. If anyone had a reason to complain, it was them. But instead of grumbling, Scripture says they began praying and singing hymns of praise to God. Their gratitude wasn’t based on the cold prison floor or their painful wounds—it was anchored in their faith in God’s unchanging goodness. And what happened? God removed their chains and shook the earth to the point that even the jailer wanted to be saved.

That moment with Paul and Silas reminds us that gratitude is far more than a feeling. Their praise in the darkest hour not only set them free but also brought others to salvation. The same is true for us. When we choose thankfulness, we invite God’s presence and power into our situation and the hearts of those around us.

Reflection Question: What is one thing you can thank God for today, even if your situation feels difficult?

Prayer: Lord, teach me to give thanks in every circumstance. Help me to see Your hand at work in both the joys and trials of life.
