Derek Tipler

Derek A. Tipler was born in 1927, and he was born into a Catholic family in Wales in 1927, and was partly brought by a Methodist aunt. He went to university and joined the RAF where he became a Corporal. He later became a journalist for BBC and then Vatican radio.

He was very interested in the Gypsy community and contributed material for the Gypsy Lore Society. In 1952 he documented the archaic inflected Romany still spoken by some Gypsies in Wales.

He travelled round Europe with different groups of Romani bands and learnt 4 different forms of Romani. In 1971, aged 41, with his German wife Angela he travelled round Yugoslavia and northern Italy with a band of eighty Gypsies from the Sarbaja (also spelt Sarvaya) band of Kalderash (also known as Coppersmith) Gypsies. With the help of consultants from the British and Foreign Bible Society, and SIL, he translated the Gospels of Luke and Mark and tested it with the Gypsies as they travelled together. He died in 1982.

Kalderash Gospel of Mark

The Kalderash Gospel of Mark was translated by Derek Tipler working with translation consultants from the British and Foreign Bible Society and SIL. In 1971 he completed the Gospels of Mark and Luke. In 1977 the Gospel of Mark was published by the World Home Bible League (now known as the Bible League) in 1977.
