"Confession (Agnus Dei)"

Throughout history, many liturgies have included a time of confession and assurance.  It is an important part of many church services and should be considered an important part of our daily walk with the Lord.

It can be a daunting task to confess our sins, because it requires us to swallow our pride.  It’s a time when we recognize all of the things we have done wrong in the sight of the Lord, and living in that moment is more than a little bit frightening. Through Christ, we are approaching the God of the universe, the creator of everything, the righteous judge, all to say that we have not done things according to His will.  We are admitting our failures to the King of all Kings!

In the two verses of this song, Confession (Agnus Dei), we are admitting that we are selfish, proud, and arrogant. We are confessing that we do not live up to the commands of God.  As we move into the chorus, we continue our confession by asking for forgiveness with the familiar text of the Agnus Dei to say, “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.”

But how beautiful it is that we don’t have to live in this moment of confession forever.  We have a Savior, Jesus Christ, who has taken away our sin. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us! We can be assured that his blood has justified us and we are made clean in the sight of God!

Our time of confession doesn’t need to be frightening.  Our sin ought to send us running towards Him, not running from Him.  Because we know that when we confess, we are approaching a loving and gracious God, and we know that through the death and resurrection of Jesus, He will forgive us.

We hope that this song will help you to find a time for confession, and that it will also give you the confidence to approach Jesus, receive his grace, and to be assured that you are forgiven.
