Accusation

Introduction

There are times in life when we are the target of an accusation, and rightly so because we are guilty of an offense. Though this is difficult for us, in such cases, we might say, “Justice is served.” But what if we are falsely accused, and there is an injustice in that case? This is the part of the Joseph story where things get really hard, and you may begin to wonder if this guy will ever get a break.

The Reasons for Accusation

When a false accusation is leveled, it is usually an attempt, sometimes out of desperation, to right some kind of perceived wrong. There really is an offense in the accuser’s mind, even if it is imperceptible to others. They might even rationalize that their accusation is an attempt to get justice. In such instances, though unreasonable to most, delusion is the reason for the accusation.

In other situations, the accuser is not delusional but rather is intentional. There are no mental/emotional gymnastics employed to justify. Justice or injustice is irrelevant. Here there is simply evil intent. Revenge and punishment are the goals.

  • Have you or someone you know suffered the injustice of a false accusation?

The Effects of Accusation

Regardless of which of the two classifications of reasons for a false accusation are at play, the effects can be devastating. One effect is more immediate and focuses on the actions/decisions that must be made in response to the accusation. Due to the nature of the accusation, the response is swift, with little regard for due process. A job can be lost. A fine must be paid. Freedom may even be sacrificed.

A second effect is more long-term and deeper in nature. The accuser attacks the person's actions and the actual person himself/herself. Character is questioned. Reputations are ruined. Relationships may be severed.

  • Can you think of a recent story in the news that might reflect either/both of these effects of false accusations?

Will Accusation Master You?

  • How can you prepare your heart and mind for the potential of a false accusation?
