Today’s passage comes from a story about escape! Scary Egyptian soldiers were chasing God’s people, but God made the soldiers drown in the sea. As soon as God’s people were safe, they sang this song.

Before you read, thank God that he always hears you. Ask him to teach you about prayer today.

1. Read Exodus 15:1-6. How many things can you find in this song that tell us what God has done?

2. How many things can you find in this song that tell us something else about God?

Why did the Israelites sing? Because they were filled with huge love for God! They told God how much they loved him. They thanked God for what he had done. We can do this too. It doesn’t have to be singing. We can praise God any time, any place.

The rescue story that this Bible passage comes from is a pointer to the bigger rescue that would happen much later. Jesus came to rescue us from sin. In the story, Egyptian soldiers were destroyed—and because of Jesus, sin and death were destroyed! In the story, God’s people made it to a new land—and because of Jesus, Christians will make it to a whole new creation one day.

3. What has God done for you?

4. What else do you like about God?

Say or write your own prayer of praise to Jesus. You can use phrases from the song and add your own reasons why Jesus is so great. It could sound like this:

I will sing to Jesus, for he is [add your own words here]. He has [add something Jesus has done for you]. Jesus is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him.
