We live in a diverse society with a history of ethnic conflict. As the early church discovered, the gospel has enormous implications for how we relate to others from different backgrounds. While we rejoice at many triumphs of leaders in the Bible, we scarce remember their frequent, often undeserved, trials. It is during these challenges of life, survived over decades usually, that God creates a foundation for their incredible leadership success. We will examine many heroic, overcoming stories and how God’s word encourages us during difficult circumstances. Leadership isn’t easy, but He will always be with us.

Over the next two weeks, we'll follow the Easter story as we remember there is always a glimmer of hope, even in the deepest darkness. We'll talk about how Jesus is with us in the darkness and explore what it means that Jesus is the light in the darkness.

The book of Daniel tells us about four young Jewish men who were taken captive by the Babylonian king to serve him. In their new and hostile environment, these youths remained faithful to their God and bore a powerful witness to people around them. Their stories contain valuable lessons for us, since we too are living in a world that is often antagonistic towards God.

Real friendship is precious, both in times of trouble and in times of joy. The Bible offers several examples and gives advice on how to be a good friend. And most important: God Himself offers us friendship! Jesus even gave his life for his friends, so that they would have eternal life. The apostle Paul tells his readers, “We must suffer many things on our way into God’s kingdom” (Acts 14:22). Reading the book of Acts or hearing testimonies from Christians all over the world, these words are proven true. Believers face opposition and persecution. Maybe you experience affliction yourself. In this reading plan, we want to encourage you and to teach you how to handle affliction.

Because Peter and the other apostles knew Jesus not only as Savior, but also as teacher, leader, mentor, and friend, they became effective leaders in the early Church drawing continually on Jesus’ words, the example He set, and the experience they gained under His earthly leadership to advance God’s Kingdom by advancing the Gospel. 

The world can sometimes feel full of disappointments and difficult circumstances. The idea of joy may seem too lofty. Joy is something we choose to see, no matter the circumstances. A joy we choose to feel, even when the world feels empty and cold, and one that shows us we were meant for more than we know. Let's discover the elevated life of joy that is our gift from God.
