Zechariah 10

10
Yahweh Cares for His People
1Ask Yahweh for rain
in the season of the latter rain.
For Yahweh is the Thunderstorm-Maker.
He will give them the outpouring of rain,
causing the grain of the field to flourish.
2The household gods # 10:2 Or “teraphim,” a term used for family gods passed down through generations, usually figurines in human form. God was saying, “Don’t ask idols to help you; it will be in vain. I am the one who will provide the rain, crops, and all that you need.” babble nonsense,
the fortune tellers see false visions,
dreamers peddle delusions and give comfort in vain.
Therefore, the people have strayed like scattered, suffering, lost sheep
because they have no shepherd.
3“I am enraged at the so-called shepherds,
and I will vent my anger and punish the proud leaders. # 10:3 Or literally “he-goats,” a metaphor for domineering, oppressive leaders. See Isa. 14:9; Ezek. 34:17.
I, Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies,
care deeply for my flock, the people of Judah.
I will transform them from a shepherdless flock of sheep
into brave battle horses of splendor.
4Out of them will emerge the cornerstone # 10:4 This can be viewed as a Messianic prophecy of Christ, our Chief Cornerstone. See Ps. 118:22; Isa. 28:16; Mark 12:10; Acts 4:11; 1 Peter 2:5–8. and the tent peg. # 10:4 See Judg. 4:21–22; 5:26; Isa. 22:23–24.
From them will emerge battle bows
and warrior captains.
Together 5they will be like warriors
trampling the foe in battle like mud in the streets.
They will fight because Yahweh fights with them;
they will defeat and humiliate the horsemen.
6“I will make the people of Judah mighty
and the descendants of Joseph victorious.
And I will bring them back home
because I have compassion on them.
They will be as though I had never rejected them,
for I am Yahweh their God, and I will answer their prayers.
7The people of Israel # 10:7 Or “Ephraim,” a metonymy for the Northern Kingdom of Israel. will be like warriors.
Their hearts will be cheered as though by wine.
Their children will see this and be full of joy,
and their hearts will celebrate and rejoice in Yahweh.
8“I will whistle to call them home as a shepherd gathers his sheep,
for I have redeemed them.
And they will be as numerous as ever before.
9Though I sowed my people as seed among the nations,
they will remember me in those faraway lands.
They will all return and rear their children.
10For I will bring them home from Egypt
and gather them back from Assyria;
I will lead them back into the land of Gilead and Lebanon,
yet even there they will not have enough space.
11“I # 10:11 That is, the Lord. The Hebrew is “He,” and the Greek is “They [the people of Israel].” will cross the turbulent sea of trouble
and calm its waves. # 10:11 Or “strike down its waves.” Jesus calmed the troubled sea (see Matt. 8:23–27; Mark 4:35–41).
All the depths of the Nile will dry up.
I will humble arrogant Assyria
and dismantle the power # 10:11 Or “scepter,” a metaphor for the power and dominion of Egypt. of Egypt.
12I will make my people mighty in me,
and they will walk # 10:12 Or “glory [boast]” (LXX). in my name.
I, Yahweh, declare it.”
