Four Ways to be Light in a Dark Place

One of the military men in our small group voiced his discouragement over the crude atmosphere in his workplace. His desire was to be “light in a dark place.” But in this current culture, what does that really mean for a Christian? Our resulting discussion led to agreement on these four actions for a follower of Christ to take:

1. Pray. Ask God not only for your own strength, but for those who are careless in their conversation and actions. Pray for the Holy Spirit to soften their hearts to consider different behavior—and, ultimately, to know the peace of Jesus Christ. Key verse: Ephesians 6:18

2. Look for ways to bless others in your workplace. Perhaps a word of encouragement or helping hand will defuse a situation. We reminded our friend that “hurt people hurt people”—and we agreed that compassion for others, although not always easy, was vital. Key verse: Romans 12:14,17

3. Watch your words. We shared ways our friend could speak only kind words about his marriage and his wife in sharp contrast to the usual practice of spouse-bashing. Complaining about the work and superiors is also all too common,yet his witness to others was to speak respectfully. Key passages: James 1:19-20, Philippians 2:14-16, Hebrews 13:4, Colossians 4:6

4. Excel in your work. Others are watching and are challenged by commitment to a job well done. Being light in a dark place can start with a pleasant countenance—because a smile at an appropriate time conveys more about contentment in your heart than about a situation. Key verse: Colossians 3:23-24

We want to put Jesus Christ, not ourselves, on display in our lives.  So don’t underestimate your Christian influence in a work environment.
