The name Jehovah reveals that God is independent and self-existent.
God’s naming Himself Jehovah also indicates that, although God does choose to enter into relationship with His creation, His existence is completely independent of it. As the creator God who existed before all things, His identity is not defined by any other being except Himself: “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM’” (Exodus 3:15).
]We as humans are dependent beings because our existence relies on outside factors such as the availability of air, food, and water.
Only Jehovah is independent of all other creatures and is completely self-existent. The beauty of Jehovah’s self-existence is that God does not create us and enter into relationship with us out of any sense of need; His choice to form a covenant with His people is an utterly free act of love and grace. He is not bound by anything that we have done or will do. As the apostle Paul reminds us in his letter to Titus,
“When the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy” (Titus 3:4-5).
