 Lasting treasure 

In early 2018, a couple from Colorado sold everything they owned and bought a boat in pursuit of their dream to sail the open seas. And they did. For one day. But on day two, their boat struck something under the water. Water flooded in, and they had to abandon ship. The boat capsized, and they lost everything. The girlfriend cried, “Everything I’ve worked for, everything I’ve owned since I was a child, I brought with me. It’s just floating away, and there’s nothing I can do.”

Can you relate? You might not have lost your net worth in a tragic boat accident, but I bet you have experienced the painful reality of temporary things. Your health doesn’t last. Your romantic connection fades. Your finances dip into the red. Your friends lose touch. Your sight, hearing, and memory slowly decline. And we join that poor woman in lamenting, “It’s just floating away, and there’s nothing I can do.”

Actually, there’s something you can do—look to Jesus. He promised, “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matthew 6:20). Jesus promised us lasting treasure in heaven, where there is no theft or loss or decay. Even better, Jesus went to a cross so that heaven itself would be our eternal treasure, a gift that no bankruptcy, divorce papers, or cancer cell could take from us.

So, when life reminds you that everything is temporary, fix your eyes on Jesus, your lasting and eternal treasure.
