Jochebed
How He Sees Us
The first ten verses of Exodus 2 describe Moses’ lineage, his parents, his birth and upbringing. We learn about his mother’s courage, trust, unwavering faith and sacrifice and yet we only know her as “Moses’ mom.”
“Moses’ Mom.” I find this so convicting because I struggled so much with my identity after becoming a mom. I traded in work clothes for sweat pants, showers for spit-up, and lesson plans for the never-ending pile of laundry.
It took awhile for me to feel comfortable in my new role. I had to learn that my identity was not in my achievements, degrees and job titles. I had to learn to see myself as God sees me. After all, He knows me by name.
In Exodus 6:20, we finally learn the name of Moses’ mom: Jochebed, which means, "Jehovah is her glory."
Her story isn't a resume to show off her education, qualifications and previous experience. It isn't a social media feed of a picture perfect home and family. Instead, her story is about her identity as a faithful child of God whose glory was reflected through that faith.
Stay strong in your faith, Mama, and know that God has called you by name. You are His by design and were made for this role! May our own stories be worthy of the name Jochebed, “Jehovah is her glory.”
