589 BC The officials of Judah think Jeremiah should die and put him in a muddy cistern. A eunuch rescues him. Zedekiah secretly asks Jeremiah for advice, promises his safety and keeps him in the court house. Jeremiah assures the king that if he submits to Babylon he will live. He also tells the frightened eunuch he will live but the Anathoth plotters, the Lord says, will die. A psalmist recalls God’s deeds and His promises to Israel. In Babylon God reveals to Ezekiel that the Egyptians can no more avoid defeat by Babylon than Assyria did.
