What Are You Trying to Prove?

Have you ever posted on social media, hoping a particular person would see your post? Have you then asked yourself what you are trying to prove to them?

Social media is also powerful because it becomes a vehicle to prove something to the world. Maybe we are trying to prove that we are worthy of a role we have, that we belong to a certain club, or even that we matter in the world. We hope certain people would see our posts and change their view of us.

This deep insecurity drives the need to post to social media and fish for likes and comments. It might even cause us to edit how we appear on social media. 

But God says we are already loved just as we are. As a child of God, we don’t have to prove ourselves. In fact, God created us to be ourselves, not to prove ourselves. 

The more we exhibit God through the uniqueness of who we are, the more He is glorified.

In Mark 6:1-4, Jesus goes back to His hometown and preaches there. But because everyone there knew where He came from, they dishonored Him. In a time where people were given respect through their father’s name, they acknowledged Jesus as “Mary’s son”—which signaled their belief that he was born out of wedlock. 

But Jesus’ response is puzzling here. He doesn’t rebuke anybody. He doesn’t try to prove Himself to these people, though He could’ve. He just says a statement, then leaves the crowd.

Jesus never felt the need to prove Himself to the people who had hard hearts against Him. He instead served where He was needed.

On social media, you can try to prove yourself to the people who will always believe the same things about you. Or, you can prove that you are loved and valued by God, and that’s all that matters to you.

Today, pray that God will drive away the need to prove yourself to others on social media, and instead show you just how much you are loved by Him.
