MEANINGLESS! MEANINGLESS?نموونە

We live in what has been dubbed an “outrage culture”. Jumping to conclusions, speaking in haste, throwing stones from glass houses – these are common and (in the economy of online debate especially) frequently rewarded behaviours.
The Teacher says no. Do not be quickly provoked. Patience is better than pride.
He also cautions us against disparaging the current moment (does calling ours an “outrage culture” count?!) It is easy to look on the chaos of the present with a pessimistic eye, and retreat into apathy or nostalgia for the past. But God is always at work in his world. We must not underestimate his patience or power.
Do you feel optimistic or pessimistic about the “days” we are in? Why?
Prayer: Father, you are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. Teach me to be patient like you. Renew me with hope for your world. Amen.

The book of Ecclesiastes is not an easy part of the Bible – largely because it plumbs depths to our souls and experience that are not easy either. Strap in for an unflinching, possibly uncomfortable, but ultimately hopeful encounter with a very ancient and also very contemporary anguish about what it’s like to be human in God’s marvellous, broken world.
