IT WAS ALL IN THE TIMING

From Mary’s (very human) point of view, it was all in the timing. Census or no census, the last thing she needed in her condition was a long journey! Yes, she was young and healthy, but she was so big, and so very, very tired. Surely she would deliver soon!

She knew that Joseph, as always, would do all he could to help, but she was apprehensive about all that walking in hot weather, with swollen ankles, and backache too! Come to think of it, the backache was fairly recent. She had only really noticed it over the past couple of hours. Could it be that her labour was starting now, just as they were leaving? If so, that was really bad timing!

From God’s point of view, it was all in the timing too. His Son would be born in Bethlehem – David’s town – as foretold by the prophet Micah. As a descendant of King David, the infant Jesus was entering the world at a key moment in history as part of God’s rescue plan for his people. Perfect timing!

Hold on to those ‘precious’ feelings as you try to imagine each part of the story: the birth of Jesus, the song of the angels, the wonder and delight of the shepherds. What a precious time for all of them!
