The Trap// Appearance

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? What thoughts do you have about your face, your body, and your skin? Now ask yourself, “Where did these beliefs come from ?"

Most of us were taught from a young age that our appearance determines our worth. For many of us, this has resulted in unhealthy perceptions of our own bodies, a constant need for external validation, and damaging habits designed to make us feel better about our appearance. We often spend more time critiquing ourselves than celebrating how beautifully and purposefully God created each of us.

The Truth:

Truth #1: God is the Great Potter.

Like clay, God took time to sculpt our every feature. He delighted in creating us. As with every other part of creation, He made our physical appearance with intention. We have to believe that our appearance is a part of his beautiful plan for us.

Truth #2: Change is okay.

Our looks will not last. It's hard to imagine it, but our appearance will change and age with time - and that’s okay. Though we can be conscious about our appearance, we can’t let it consume us. Instead let's practice loving ourselves no matter what stage of life we’re in.

Truth #3: Our investments matter.

Let’s absolutely invest in looking and feeling great about our appearance, but let's not neglect how we look on the inside. Invest in what matters most, your soul. Beyond our outward appearance, the condition of our heart, our integrity, our healing and our character are the parts of us that will last.

Application:

We can avoid this trap by designating time to develop the traits that nourish our soul. Just like we develop self-care routines, we have to intentionally develop habits that care for our soul. Take time to draft a weekly soul-care plan. This can look like quiet time with God, rest, journaling and more.
