Becoming Like a Child

Growing up

“Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.” (1 Corinthians 14:20)

Besides the exhortations to become like a child, the Bible also encourages us to become mature. This is not mutually exclusive. We can live in dependence on the Lord God as we grow in knowledge and love and steadfastness. In this way, we can be an example and mentor to others who are just starting their journey of faith.

When we are newly born again, we are still a "baby in the faith." Then we need “pure spiritual milk” to grow (1 Peter 2:2). We still need to learn the basics. But eventually, we are ready for "solid food." Then we become “skilled in the word of righteousness” and learn to “distinguish good from evil” (Hebrews 5:13-14). Our understanding of the truth increases and so does our ability to apply God's Word in our own lives. This growth is necessary. It is not good to always remain "babies." Faith must take root in our hearts, grow, and bear fruit. That does not negate the fact that we are children of God. We will never outgrow that relationship; that is not God’s intention at all.

Are you a child of God? Are you growing spiritually?
