All you need is love?!

“So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”(1 Corinthians 13:13)

The concept of love is popular in sayings like ‘Make love, not war’ and ‘All you need is love.’ People stress the value of love, especially where they find it lacking, for example, in war or the context of harsh materialism. When life is hard, and our circumstances are difficult, love can make life bearable and even beautiful.

The Bible agrees that love is of crucial importance. If we possess everything but do not have love, we are nothing (1 Corinthians 13:1-3). Love is patient and kind; it rejoices with the truth, it endures all things, and it will never end. In summary, love is indispensable and wonderful! This is actually not surprising since “love is from God” (1 John 4:7). It is a good gift from our Creator and an essential part of His character.

However, 1 Corinthians 13:13 mentions faith and hope as important elements in our lives as well. Love in itself is not ‘all we need.’ We must define and express love in connection to faith and hope in the Lord God. Let’s take a couple of days to explore how the Bible defines love and how this love expresses itself.
