The Story of Abraham 

If righteousness is received through faith in Jesus Christ, then what about people in Old Testament times like Abraham? Did these folks receive righteousness differently since Jesus had not yet been born? Paul shows that even Abraham, who lived hundreds of years before Christ, was justified by faith in Christ, as He looked forward to the day when the Messiah would come and atone for his sins. It was not by works that he was justified, nor was it by circumcision (the sign of the Old Covenant) – it was only through faith.
