The Ten Commandments for Business: Commandment Two

In this series, we’re pondering the Ten Commandments and how they can relate to our business life.

If you’ve ever been to a carnival and had an artist draw a picture of you, it can be offensive. Especially if the drawing is not a proper representation of who you are. In the same manner, many created things are copied and worshipped, insulting the one who created them.

In Exodus 20:4, God said, “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them.”

Although in our modern society we may not physically bow down to worship something, that doesn't mean that it isn't being worshipped. We can be caught up in worshipping our possessions or our careers.

Some people worship science; others worship the environment, and still others, the building they purchased. These are from God, but they should not be worshipped because they are a limited misrepresentation of the totality of the Holy God we serve.

Questions For Reflection

  • What is worship? If you heard someone claim to worship something aside from a deity, how would you expect them to do that? What are signs that an individual worships something? What things have you worshipped?
  • What are you worshipping? If those things are worthy of reverence, how would that be more appropriately shown? Are there things in your life that ought to be shown more appreciation?
