Dusting Off Hopes & Dreams


There’s something about the start of a new year that invokes specific feelings and ideas.

Most of us have already determined our resolutions and have made attempts to ensure that these changes come to fruition. In fact, I would argue that much of the first quarter of the year is spent dusting off our hopes and dreams, taking them off of the shelf that we set them on when things got too busy.

We have a natural inclination to revisit our aspirations, plans, and goals at the start of a new year. This is a common cycle, where we hope for change and improvement, while eagerly anticipating divine intervention to take place and assist us in our efforts. We make plans to eat healthier, to eliminate bad habits, to save money, or to take up that project that we’ve been putting off.

Unfortunately, studies have shown time and time again that the vast majority of these resolutions remain unfinished. Most are forgotten before the month of January has ended. How can we ensure that our resolutions, goals, and dreams are reached within this year?

It starts with committing our work to the Lord.

Proverbs 16:3 tells us that if we commit our work to the Lord, that our plans will be established. Therefore, we must not only invite God into our resolution planning, but also listen to His guidance so that we may fully carry out these plans. When we find ourselves bogged down by our busy schedules, we can ask God to provide us with the strength and willpower to continue our pursuit of the goals that we set for ourselves. We must surrender our actions, our ideas, and our responsibilities to God.

By inviting God to be part of our journey, we won’t be as easily sidetracked by upcoming obstacles.

When we rely on our own ability, we can often let ourselves down.

But when we rely on God, He never disappoints.
