Once upon a time…

People love stories, whether in the form of a book, a movie, or a picture; we all love to get lost in a good story. Stories are a powerful way to communicate. They can be passed down from generation to generation, forming and shaping culture. There are all kinds of stories. Some stories are just for fun and entertainment, while others have a moral or lesson we can learn.

Jesus was a master storyteller, and the stories He told, though they were short and simple, always had a meaning. Those stories are called parables. They are word pictures that help people understand a new way of living. Jesus didn’t tell stories just to entertain people; His stories had powerful spiritual meaning that changed the minds and hearts of those who listened. We can read the wisdom from these stories in our Bibles today.

Jesus shared a parable about building on strong foundations. He had just finished teaching the people some truths of life in the kingdom when He finished by telling a story of two builders. Jesus was warning His followers that they should not just hear God’s Word but put it into practice and build on that strong foundation, or else when storms come, they’ll break and come crashing down. God’s wisdom is the foundation for our lives.
