The Gospel Truth About God

When we see the effects of a tsunami, or an erupting volcano, or a star going supernova, we can’t help but be astounded by the power. Immense power. Power that we could never come close to understanding or recreating.

God gives us a window into His incomparable strength. Scripture teaches that He is greater than the stars:

“He counts the stars and calls them all by name. How great is our Lord! His power is absolute! His understanding is beyond comprehension!” (Psalm 147:3-5)

And Psalm 29:3 teaches that He is greater than the floods:

“The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.”

God’s power is humbling and frightening. But it is also seasoned with divinity.

When you see a butterfly emerging from a cocoon after undergoing metamorphosis, a wolf couple remaining faithful to each other for life, or an eagle soaring in the wind, you can’t help but think that the idea for all this came from somewhere out of this world.

The beauty of the dawn sky, the birth of a child, and the marvel of a melody all witness to the inspiration of something beyond us.

God’s power and His divinity are constantly being revealed. It is a wonder that we don’t fall down on our knees in continual worship of such an amazing Being. How can the truth of God’s existence not permeate everything we think or do?

Jesus is the most complete example of this. When the soldiers came to arrest Him, a word from His mouth caused them all to fall down in terror (John 18:4-6). Yet He allowed Himself to be crucified so that our sins could all be paid for (John 10:18).

Power and divinity: the good news about God.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You have revealed Yourself as all-powerful and perfectly divine. Help me to trust You and to give You the glory You deserve. I am sorry for the times I have exchanged Your glory for something less. Forgive me. Continue to help me grow in my understanding of who You are. Amen.
