One God for everything
It is a striking scene. Peter and Gaius work together while talking about God. A Gentile and a Jew. Although they are very different, they still walk together.
Gaius explains how Roman life is shaped by many gods. There is one god for travel, another for war, another for fertility, fishing, peace at home. Each area of life has its own divine specialist. The goal is simple: keep the gods favorable towards you.
Peter responds with something very different. For the Jewish people, there is one God for every part of life.
The same God for victory in war. The same God for fertility, fishing, and relationships. Everything falls under the authority, power, and care of the one true God. There is no division of responsibility, and no switching between sources of trust.
Gaius’ description is not as distant as it might seem today.
Spiritual matters? Go to church.
Risks? Get good insurance from the bank.
Mental health issues? Find the right therapist.
None of these things are wrong. Therapy can be life-giving. Insurance can be wise. Church matters deeply. The deeper question is not whether these resources are used, but where trust ultimately rests.
Do you place your trust in people, systems, organizations, money, or solutions that offer a sense of control and security? Or do you place your trust in God, and His Son Jesus, while receiving the resources He provides along the way? The difference may seem subtle, but it is significant.
When Jesus is asked about the greatest commandment, He points back to Deuteronomy 6: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This kind of love is not divided into categories. God is not one option among many. He is the center of everything.
When you view life through that lens, you see more than habits or preferences. You see your true allegiance.
Where you place your trust shapes your decisions, defines where you seek peace, and determines what you lean on when things fall apart. The invitation of Jesus is not to reject wisdom, help, or community, but to root every part of your life in Him first.
Reflection Questions
- What do you place your trust in?
- Who do you turn to when your life feels unstable?
- What place does Jesus currently have in your trust and decisions?
- What is Jesus inviting you to today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess that I often place my trust in things other than You. My earthly securities give me a sense of safety. But You call me to trust only in You, to love You and those around me. Lord, I want to live that way. Please help me. Thank You for today’s reminder. You are good. Amen.
