Focus of the month: (Kingdom)

7 Now, therefore, thus shall you say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel, 8 and I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 9 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall waste them no more, as formerly, 10 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the LORD will build you a house. 11 When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you, 14 but I will confirm him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.’ ”.

Shadows of the King

As we conclude our journey through 2 Samuel, we see David’s story end with a profound lesson on God’s faithfulness and mercy. In 2 Samuel 24, David’s census—driven by pride—leads to a devastating plague. Yet, even in judgment, God shows mercy, halting the angel’s hand and sparing His people (v. 16). This moment reminds us that God’s faithfulness endures even when we fall short.

David’s response to God’s mercy is significant. He insists on offering a sacrifice that costs him something (v. 24), reflecting genuine repentance and devotion. The altar he builds on Araunah’s threshing floor becomes a sacred space, pointing to the future temple and ultimately to Jesus, the perfect sacrifice for our sins.

Throughout 2 Samuel, we have witnessed God’s unbroken promises despite human failures. His covenant with David in 2 Samuel 7—that David’s throne would be established forever—finds its fulfillment in Jesus, the King of Kings. While David’s reign was marked by both triumph and failure, Jesus’ reign is one of perfect righteousness and peace.

As we reflect on this passage, consider these truths:

1. God’s Faithfulness: How have you seen God’s faithfulness in your life this past month?
2. The Cost of Worship: What does it mean for you to offer God your best today?
3. The Coming King: How does David’s story deepen your appreciation for Christ’s sacrifice?

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness and mercy. Help us to worship You with hearts of genuine devotion and gratitude. Thank You for Jesus, the ultimate fulfillment of Your promises. Strengthen our faith as we await the fullness of Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
