Devotional - Loving God at Work

Love at work is a major leap for most people in today’s culture. That’s because it is rarely modeled in the fast-paced, production-focused, and results-driven environments that many of us work in. And to be quite blunt, scores of Christians have been discipled into having a wonderful “quiet time” in the morning, only to head off for work, leaving our connection to God back at home in our favorite chair.

Without implementing the last suggestion from yesterday’s devotional (finding a visible, tactile reminder of God’s love), we can become practical atheists at work — the place where we spend half of our lives.

Colossians 3:23 has awakened numerous people from their workday spiritual slumber. They come alive with the desire to work for God. They begin to focus on Him while they work. They discover that He is our true boss and the One we work for. They see working heartily in education, construction, accounting, parenting, marketing, or the trades as worship to God.

Pause for a moment to consider your work.

  • What does it look like to work with all your heart?
  • How are you doing?
  • Where are you doing well?
  • Where do you need God’s help?

While this is a seismic shift in our perspective of loving God at work, it is not the ultimate aim. As much as God loves for us to work well for Him, He longs for us to work with Him. This is reflected in Jesus’ words about abiding in John 15. He is the vine. We are the branches. Apart from Him, we can do nothing.

Be assured. God is at work. He is there with you, accessible to you, available to help and encourage you, and we can develop an ongoing conversation with Him. But God is also at work in another way: He is up to something there and invites you to join Him. He is pursuing the people you work with. This is how we practically love God at work, and abiding is critical for us to be fruitful, for our personal formation, and for us to join with God in His redemption plan for the world.

Closing Prayer

  • Take some time to thank God for the work He has called you to.
  • Praise Him for His desire to be in connection with you throughout the day.
  • Tell Him where you need His help.
  • Ask Him to guide you in working for Him and working with Him.
