Wearing the Right Blinders

We have learned that “multi-tasking” isn’t a real thing.

Study after study has proven that dividing our attention in numerous directions is simply inefficient and ineffective. It can even impair cognitive functioning. To be honest, I don’t have enough of that to spare, so I probably shouldn’t take any chances.

But distractions exist. Whether we choose them and tell ourselves that we are getting more done, or whether they present themselves to us as something pressing that needs to be taken care of, distractions are out there.

Men, how do you handle your distractions?

Are you a multitasker, trying to listen to a book while you write that important email? Or do you allow yourself to get distracted by that idea that comes up that just has to be dealt with right away?

That’s my particular struggle. As soon as an idea wedges its way into my thought processes, I simply have to get up and address it. This trait is being passed on to both of my sons, and I’m working hard to notice it in myself and help them not have the same struggle.

Nehemiah modeled focus and commitment for men. In his efforts to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, he faced opposition (see yesterday’s devotional) and distractions. Some of his enemies—those who wanted to thwart the rebuilding of the walls—made numerous attempts to lure him away from the work.

His reply in today’s passage showed a deep focus and dedication to completing the task.

There are plenty of things to distract us from the good things we are engaged in. Perhaps they are even good things in themselves.

But perhaps they are things of our own imaginings, or perhaps even the manipulations of Satan.

Regardless, Nehemiah shows us what it means to be a man of focus and dedication, a man who wore blinders to everything that would distract him from his work.

May we be men who wear the right kind of blinders. Let’s keep the right things in focus—the work that God has called us to.

Prayer: God, this world is full of so many good things, but even good things can be a distraction sometimes—and not everything is good. Help me learn to focus on the tasks in front of me so I can accomplish things to the best of my ability. Amen.

Reflection: What typically distracts you? Have you been pulled away from something God has given you to do? Ask God this week for focus and determination like Nehemiah.
