Jesus: Son of Man

The title “Son of Man” may sound ordinary, but it is one of the most profound and frequently used titles Jesus gives Himself in the Gospels. It is used nearly 80 times in the Gospels. Unlike titles such as “Son of God” or “Messiah,” which others often use for Jesus, “Son of Man” is uniquely His own self-designation.

What does it really mean?

Contrary to popular belief, Son of Man is not merely about Jesus’ humanity. Yes, in certain contexts it highlights His solidarity with humankind (Mark 2:10), but the full weight of this title becomes clear when we look at its Old Testament background, especially Daniel 7:13–14. There, Daniel sees “one like a son of man” coming with the clouds of heaven, given dominion, glory, and a kingdom by the Ancient of Days. This heavenly figure is worshiped by all peoples and reigns forever.

When Jesus refers to Himself as the Son of Man, He is not just calling Himself human, He is identifying Himself as that exalted, divine figure who will one day come with power and glory. This claim was so clear that, during His trial, the high priest tore his robes in outrage, accusing Jesus of blasphemy (Mark 14:63–64).

Yet, Jesus also redefines expectations. The Son of Man does not just come to judge, He comes first to suffer. Jesus repeatedly says that the Son of Man must be rejected, killed, and rise again (Mark 8:31). He combines the exalted heavenly figure of Daniel with the suffering servant of Isaiah. This fusion is the heart of the gospel.

So, what does this mean for us?

  • First, Jesus understands our struggles. He did not remain distant in the clouds, but He stepped into our pain.
  • Second, His sufferings were not a detour from glory but the very path to it. That’s good news for anyone who’s suffering today.
  • Finally, Jesus, the Son of Man, is coming again. This time, not in weakness, but with power and glory. Are you ready for His return? The Son of Man came once to redeem. He will come again to reign.

Take a moment today to reflect:

  • Do I follow Jesus only in His glory or also in His suffering?
  • How can I live today in light of His soon return?
